Courses

The Department of Environmental Sociology at Jena offers students two alternating Master Courses in the Winter Semesters, one on "Contemporary Environmental Sociology" and the other on "Classical Sociology and the Environment," as well as a contemporary topic course each summer semester. In the past the latter have included courses on the Sociology of Failure, Animals in Society, Science and Technology, Resilience, Real World Experiments, or the Sociology of Knowledge and Nonknowledge. Whereas the courses in the winter semesters are more theory oriented, the summer semester courses are topic and problem oriented. Each semester several guest teachers and professors support the teaching focus in environmental sociology with classes on both the BA and the MA level. In the past these have included courses and lectures on urban nature, renewable energies, ecofeminism, socio-ecological transitions, sustainability, and environmental conflict resolutions. In addition, in the winter semester the department is part of the BA level team taught introductory lecture series on "Key Problems of Sociology" (Ringvorlesung Schlüsselprobleme).
