The M.A. program in Sociology at Jena offers focuses on "Work-Welfare-Profession" and "Social Change and Sociological Diagnosis of Time". In terms of its contents, the program relies on the established research directions of the department that are closely connected with the issues investigated in the Collaborative Research Centre 580 "Social Developments after Structural Change".
The emphasis on work, welfare and profession involves students in the analysis of the production and re-production of social differences through labour markets and institutions of the welfare state in a systematic historical and international perspective. Special attention is paid to the analysis of societal consequences of how work and life are being affected by the market as well as research into organisational and psychosocial phenomena of crises.
The focus on social change and sociological diagnosis of time offers an opportunity to analyse the processes of society transformation from a perspective of current developments in sociological theory and, especially, the theory of society. Special interest is paid, on the one hand, to a systematic investigation of aims, forms and methods of the synthetic time construction in the past and present and, on the other hand, to the theoretically and empirically grounded analysis of reactions to social change by individual and collective actors.
The M.A. program in Sociology is constructed as a sequence of the B.A. program and has a strong research orientation. The subject area is strongly focused on the scientific treatment of concrete practical issues. The program lasts two years, including the M.A. thesis, and ends with the degree of Master of Arts.
