This research project examines the structure of child and adolescent support in East and West Germany after 1990. In this year, a new child and adolescent support law (KJHG/ SGB VIII) was introduced in both the new and old German states. In front of a background of socially structured orientation and action patterns, the regional specifics will be analyzed comparatively. The core of this research is the adolescent support practices in the state regions of Baden-Württemberg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia.
This project, which is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) as part of the EU alliance initiative EQUAL, follows and analyses the implementation of an IT documentation system in two therapeutic institutions for people with mental illnesses and/or substance abuse problems. The challenge in this project is to create a form of documentation that, on the one hand, makes complex procedures transparent and planable and, on the other hand, takes the non-standardization principles of individual life crisis processing into consideration. The networking of rehabilitation techniques in various fields should lead to an improvement of career enforcing integration. Difficulties with the “split” between standardized and case-specific care during the rehabilitation process should be combated with the development of a generalized concept of employee training for working with the documentation system.
In the social services, one can observe a new trend towards the development of a grey area between professional and unprofessional social support. Within this grey area, non-professionals are acting as qualified professionals and, with that, represent new competition for real professionals. Examples include terminal care, assistance of the mentally ill, and foster families.
Our research interests focus on the question whether this development helps or hinders clients in their socialization processes. Two hypotheses will be tested against each other:
Hypothesis 1: Professional training destroys helpers’ practical life competencies and replaces them with technocratic knowledge that is applied without professional habitus. In this way, the departmentalization leads to competence loss.
Hypothesis 2: Professional training reenforces practical life competencies, as it enforces the development of practical knowledge concerning crisis counseling (Krisenbewältigung).
This project should provide a general theoretical contribution to the sociology of knowledge and professions. Project results should help leaders in social institutions provide social scientific knowledge to non-professionals during qualification training in the areas of social support, and especially child and adolescent support.
The challenge in this project was to create a form of documentation that, on the one hand, makes complex procedures transparent and planable and, on the other hand, takes the non-standardization principles of individual life crisis processing into consideration.
The term „salutogenetic“ describes an physician orientation that supports and enforces patients‘ own resources. The concrete task of clinical sociology in this case includes the implementation of sequential interaction analyses of physician-patient conversations in quality control discussion circles with primary care physicians
